Materials | White cotton skirt – light grey/white Clay – Bamboo charcoal pieces x 4 – Large silver bowl – 3 Mackerel – Salt – Pieces of foraged grass like plant (green foxtail) growing in the edges of the pavements around Ishinomaki – Three wood and paper doors (Sourced on site) – Large piece of black cotton cloth.

Description |

Portal lay in an interconnected thread of works, which have drawn on an old Irish belief and practice, in combination with drawing on the time I spent in Ishinomaki, with a focus on its people, past and present. Within this piece I coated my skin with clay together with the skin of three Mackerel. This work aimed to respect the memory of those who had lost their lives during the 2011 disaster, creating an opening, a portal, a release for those who wished to travel through.
