Tadashi Watanabe is an interdisciplinary artist working mainly in performance art, his practice has spanned over 30 years. A major impact on Watanbe’s practice was the encounter he had with the artist Ay-O, a member of the Fluxus group who was actively performing Happenings. Ay-O expressed his appreciation of Watanabe’s performance in 2002, during the international performance event, On the Edges, in Lithuania. During this time a bond was formed, influenced by this encounter, Watanbe moved to New York to expand his practice in 2003. His work received a warm reception with invitations for two New York exhibitions in 2004, at the Garapagos Art Space and Emptiness, the Tribes Gallery N.Y.. Watanabe has performed and exhibited throughout Japan and internationally. In recent years Watanabe has developed the performance art festival, Beyond the Soul, whose ethos is to create a space for artists from around the globe to come together, to explore expressions that do not fit within the framework of societal regulations or norms.
